Dr. Peter Adams on Neck and Back Pain and Stress

March 1st, 2010 by thedoc

You can increase your body’s ability to adapt to stress through proper nerve system hygeine including regular visits to your chiropractor for spinal adjustments to correct spinal subluxation and abnormal postural distortions.  Observe proper body mechanics and ergonomics.  Other than the chiropractic profession there is not one major health care system in the world that is addressing your power of healing from within.  Your spine has two important jobs, support and protection.  In December 1999 Research scientist published findings that only 6% of the nerves in the body feel pain.  I you have nerve stress on one of the nerves that do not carry pain signal.  What will you feel?  Nothing.  94% of your bodies nerves can be interfered with and you won’t feel pain.

Chiropractors have been trained to specialize in taking physical interference out of bodies so that physical bodies will have the ability to one thing….HEAL!  When your body is functioning and healing at 100% and you have better physical and emotional harmony….Do you think your chance of preventing disease or overcoming disease improves or lessens?

Your body works better with a good nerve supply!

Have your loved ones checked for vertebral subluxation.

Take Charge of Your Own Health!

Your health is priceless!  Chiropractic Care is awesome.  Part of its beauty and appeal is that it puts the power of your health back into your hands.  Becoming more aware and learning about your spinal health and posture can help you understand how to care for your spine and optimize your health.

Simple ergonomic tips can help.  Does your neck and upper back get tired or sore after working on the computer.  Try to adjust your work station so that the middle of the monitor screen is above eye level when you are seated upright and looking straight ahead.  When seated be sure to have low back support and keep the curve in your low back while seated upright.

Keeping hydrated by drinking appropriate amounts of  pure fresh water is beneficial to your spinal health.  Generally speaking, you should drink approximately half your body weight in ounces of water each day (for example, a 180 pound person should drink eleven 8 ounce cups of water)  Not soda, coffee, tea, or energy drinks—WATER.

The intervertebral disc that lies between each vertebra consist of 85% water.  If your body is dehydrated the spinal intervertebral disc will be effected.  With the disc less adaptable to the effects of gravity they are more susceptible to injury (degeneration, wear and tear, herniated disc, bulging disc)

Posture is the window to the spine.

Specific Spinal Isometric Exercise Program

February 8th, 2010 by thedoc

Information from Joshua Woggon.

Core Muscles provide spinal stability.  Most exercises, such as the ones typically performed in a health gym, do not work the core muscles.  ”Isotonic” means with motion.  Isotonic exercises, such as lifting weights, do not affect the core muscles responsible for improving your posture.

“Isometric” means without motion.  Isometric exercises are performed against resistance, and affect the postural muscles.

It takes 12 weeks to develop muscle physiology.

Your chiropractor may give you specific exercises and stretches to do to help correct postural and spinal distortions.

A foolish man will spend his youth sacrificing his health to increase his wealth… then waste his golden years sacrificing his wealth to improve his health.

Posture is the window to the spine

February 3rd, 2010 by thedoc

“Posture affects and moderated every physiologic function from breathing to hormonal production.  Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, pulse and lung capacity are among the functions most easily influenced by posture.”- American Journal of Pain Management

Poor posture affects over 100 joints, dozens of muscles, including all core muscles.  Poor posture diminishes lung capacity as the chest compresses inward and causes restriction in the lungs ability to function.  Poor posture diminishes cardio-capacity and reduces physical performance, reduces range of motion.  Studies recently indicate that poor posture shortens your life span

Specific adjustments with individualized rehabilitation including traction and mirror image exercises help to reverse some of the abnormal  muscle and ligament changes that lead to poor posture.

Good Posture=Good Function=Good Health

With Poor Posture more energy is needed to perform or control movements:  Forward head posture puts increased stress on the cervical-thoracic spine and requires more work from the erector spinae muscles to maintain an upright posture.

With the added energy expenditure….Where is that extra energy coming from?  It is being stolen from other areas of the body that possibly need it more.

Abnormal posture is making the body work harder, using more energy.  That energy is probably better spent in other areas, heart, lung, digestion, immune system, brain, etc…..

1,000 capsules of Tylenol in a lifetime doubles the risk of end stage renal disease. (New England Journal of Medicine, 1994)

Taking the correct drug for the correct diagnoses in the correct dose will kill about 106,000 Americans per year, making it the 4th most common cause of death in the US. (Journal of the American Medical Association, 1998)

The above mentioned article facts were compiled by Dr. Dan Murphy.

God put the most amazing healing ability in the human body.  Its in the brain and nervous system.  Your brain controls all the organs and cells of the body.  When free from interference the nerve system gives the body its best chance to function normally.  Gentle chiropractic adjustments release stress on the nervous system and helps your body to function better.  Correcting vertebral subluxation maximizes health potential.  Breathing fresh air (stop smoking) maximizes health potential.  Eating right maximizes health potential.

Be the best that you can be…..see your chiropractor regularly!

NSAIDS

January 27th, 2010 by thedoc

from Dr. Dan Murphy’s article reviews.

Chiropractic spinal adjusting has been shown to be better than 5 times more effective than the NSAIDS pain drugs Celebrex and Vioxx in the treatment of chronic neck and low back pain. (Spine, 2003)

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for rheumatoid and/or osteoarthritis conservatively cause 16,500 Americans to bleed to death each year, making that the 15th most common cause of death in the US. (New England Journal of Medicine, 1999)

In patients suffering from chronic pain subsequent to degenerative spinal disease, 59% can eliminate the need for pain drugs by consuming adequate levels of omega-3 essential fatty acids. (Surgical Neurology, 2006)

Those who consumed the highest amounts of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain drugs increased their risk of dementia, including Alzheimer’s dementia, by 66%. (Neurology, 2009)

Whiplash-Injury: Automobile Injury

January 27th, 2010 by thedoc

Dr. Dan Murphy collected these published facts through his article review service.

The average time for a whiplash-injured patient to achieve maximum improvement is 7 months 1 week. (Spine. 1994)

93% of patients with chronic whiplash pain who have failed medical and physical therapy care improve with chiropractic adjustments. (Injury, 1996)

The estimated incidence of chronic pain from whiplash trauma is 15-40%. (Journal of the American academy of Ortho Surg. 2007)

Glutamate and aspartame can cause chronic pain sensitization, and removing them from the diet for 4 consecutive months can eliminated all chronic pain symptoms. (Annals of Pharmacotherapy, 2002)

Scoliosis Detection

January 21st, 2010 by thedoc

www.clear-institute.com is an excellent website to get informed on scoliosis treatment options.

One study revealed, “Sixty three percent of Scoliosis was detected by family or friends.  The number of cases being detected at school had dropped considerably to 8%.  56% of all cases presented with a Cobb angle of more than 40 degrees.  The study shows that the most common method of detection was by family and friends.  Seven of these cases were detected when the deformity was advanced with Cobb angles of more than 40 degrees.  There was a drop in the number of cases detected at school when most of the curves are at an earlier stage.  We believe that greater awareness is needed in the community for earlier recognition of idiopathic scoliosis.”

Posture is crucial to function and performance!

January 14th, 2010 by thedoc

The position and balance of the human being while lying, sitting, standing, walking, the way in which we carry ourselves  affects how we move, live, function and ultimately our health and longevity.

Posture is the window to the spine.  If someones posture is out of balance, bent over or sideways,  or rotated in some way, then that is a very good indication that their internal supporting structure (spine) is out of balance, bent over sideways, or rotated in some way.  In other words abnormal posture is a sign of spinal distortion and misalignment.

“Posture affects and moderates every physiologic function from breathing to hormonal production.  Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, pulse and lung capacity are among the functions most easily influenced by posture.” -American Journal of Pain Management

Posture Perfect!  Mark Twain said “Posture is the key to life.”  We couldn’t agree more!  That’s why in addition to specific mirror image spinal adjustments we utilize a system of spinal weighting and traction that really gets results when it comes to improving posture.
